How Harvesting Healing Uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Jennifer Killeen, LPCC
I specialize in working with individuals and families impacted by trauma, and I approach this work with deep compassion, respect, and a belief in each person’s inherent capacity for healing. I believe that healing happens through connection, understanding, and recognition of the strengths that already exist within you. Life can present challenges that leave us feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or uncertain about the future. My goal is to provide a safe, supportive space where you can explore your experiences, gain insight, and cultivate meaningful change.
At Harvesting Healing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is used to help clients understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. CBT is a practical, evidence-based approach that focuses on identifying unhelpful thinking patterns and developing healthier ways of responding to life’s challenges.
Just as a gardener removes weeds that interfere with healthy growth, CBT helps identify thoughts and beliefs that may be preventing emotional wellness. Together, we explore how these patterns developed, how they impact daily life, and how they can be replaced with more balanced and constructive perspectives.
CBT may be used to help clients:
- Recognize and challenge negative self-talk
- Reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress
- Develop healthy coping skills for difficult emotions
- Improve self-esteem and self-confidence
- Manage life transitions and relationship challenges
- Address patterns of avoidance, procrastination, or self-defeating behaviors
- Build resilience and problem-solving skills
- Learn effective strategies for managing grief and loss
In sessions, clients are encouraged to become active participants in their healing journey. Through collaborative discussion, reflection, and practical exercises, we work together to identify goals and create meaningful change. CBT interventions may include examining thought patterns, practicing mindfulness and grounding techniques, developing coping strategies, and learning new ways to respond to challenging situations.
At Harvesting Healing, CBT is integrated within a compassionate, client-centered framework. While we explore thoughts and behaviors, we also honor the whole person—their relationships, values, life experiences, and strengths. The goal is not simply symptom relief, but fostering lasting growth, self-understanding, and emotional well-being.
Family Systems Approach at Harvesting Healing
At Harvesting Healing, I recognize that each person is shaped by the relationships, experiences, and environments that have influenced their life. Family Systems Theory provides a framework for understanding how these connections impact emotional well-being, communication patterns, and the ways we respond to stress and life’s challenges.
Like tending a garden, healing takes time, patience, and intention. CBT provides practical tools to help cultivate healthier thought patterns, nurture emotional resilience, and support meaningful personal growth.
Rather than viewing problems as existing solely within an individual, a family systems perspective explores the larger context in which those challenges developed. Even in individual counseling, understanding family dynamics can provide valuable insight into current thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationship patterns.
Using a Family Systems approach, we may explore:
- Family relationships and patterns across generations
- Communication styles and conflict resolution patterns
- Family roles and expectations
- Boundaries within relationships
- The impact of family experiences on current functioning
- Intergenerational beliefs, values, and coping strategies
- Relationship dynamics that contribute to stress or resilience
This approach can be particularly helpful for individuals experiencing:
- Anxiety and depression
- Relationship challenges
- Life transitions
- Grief and loss
- Caregiver stress
- Family conflict
- Difficulties establishing healthy boundaries
- Patterns that seem to repeat across relationships
Together, we work to identify how past and present relationships may be influencing your current experiences. By increasing awareness of these patterns, clients often gain greater clarity, develop healthier ways of relating to others, and strengthen their ability to make intentional choices that align with their values and goals.
As an adult telehealth counseling practice, Harvesting Healing integrates Family Systems Theory with evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, and person-centered care. This holistic approach allows us to address not only symptoms but also the relational and environmental factors that contribute to lasting change.
At Harvesting Healing, healing is viewed as both a personal and relational process. By understanding the systems that have shaped your experiences, you can cultivate healthier connections, deepen self-understanding, and create meaningful growth in every season of life.
Just as a garden is influenced by the quality of its soil, climate, and surrounding ecosystem, our emotional well-being is often shaped by the relationships and environments in which we grow. Understanding those influences can help create the conditions for healing to flourish.
